More than 50 Members of Congress have announced that they’re not running for reelection in 2024. Many cite political dysfunction and angry, divisive rhetoric as their reasons for quitting.
Retiring Democratic Senator Joe Manchin recently told CNN: “Every one of us should be ashamed of what we’re living through now in the 118th Congress.”
On the upcoming episode of ‘Let’s Find Common Ground,’ Reps. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Illinois) and Dusty Johnson (R-South Dakota) engage in a spirited discussion. They both stress the importance of finding common ground in governance, a key element in addressing the nation’s most pressing issues.
Johnson and Krishnamoorthi also speak of their work together as Members of the bipartisan House Select Committee on China and the rules the Committee follows as a template for effective legislative working relationships.
Raja Krishnamoorthi
Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi was first elected to Congress in 2016 and is now in his fourth term representing Illinois’ 8th District. He serves as Ranking Member of the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, making him the first South Asian American in history to lead a Congressional Committee.
He also serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the Committee on Oversight and Accountability as a member of the Subcommittee on Economic Growth, Energy Policy, and Regulatory Affairs. The Congressman is a Vice-Chair of the Equality Caucus and Co-Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) Immigration Task Force.
In addition, he is the founder and Chairman of the bipartisan Congressional Caucus to End the Youth Vaping Epidemic and the bipartisan Solar Caucus.
Dusty Johnson
Congressman Dusty Johnson was first elected to Congress in 2018 and is now in his third term representing South Dakota’s statewide Congressional District. He serves on the Agriculture Committee and as Chair of the Commodity Markets, Digital Assets, and Rural Development Subcommittee.
As a member of the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, Dusty has been focused on finding solutions to the supply chain crisis through his Ocean Shipping Reform Act which passed the House in 2021. He was appointed to the Select Committee on China.
Prior to being elected to Congress, Dusty Johnson served as chief of staff to the Governor of South Dakota and as vice president of an engineering firm specializing in rural telecommunications.
