Short video: Watch substantive agreement emerge between the honorable Barney Frank and Larry Kudlow during Common Ground Committee’s seventh public forum, “Finding Common Ground on Taxes”!
Common Ground Committee held its seventh public forum on Sunday, July 31 on the topic, “Finding Common Ground on Taxes.” The forum took place at the Unitarian Meeting House in historic Nantucket, Massachusetts. The Honorable Barney Frank (D-MA), a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives debated Larry Kudlow, radio host and CNBC Senior Contributor debated tax policy, Presidential candidates’ tax proposals and prospects for congressional action. The panel moderator was Gail Chaddock, former Washington Political Editor for The Christian Science Monitor. A Pulitzer-Prize winning news publication, The Monitor is noted for balanced, in-depth reporting aligned with its motto “To Injure No Man, but to Bless All Mankind” and is Common Ground Committee’s media partner.
The forum generated thoughtful discussion on key questions affecting the political debate over federal tax reform in this Presidential election year. Like earlier debates the Committee has conducted, this forum represented a bold idea: a spirited debate where panelists are encouraged not just to make their own points but to find areas of common ground. Each was challenged to bring their insights and passion to bear on this issue in a way that allows points of common ground to emerge without compromising their principles.
In all, 23 points of agreement emerged between these two public figures who represent the left and right bands of the political spectrum. Throughout the discussion, both maintained both a passion for their views and respect for each other as they worked to both state their individual positions and engage with their counterpart in a positive, solution-oriented way. The highlight of the evening was when Mr. Frank and Mr. Kudlow negotiated a tax deal on stage. It served to demonstrate to the public that people of very opposite views can put partisanship, rancor and talking points aside to work together to find a way forward on a difficult issue.
This forum demonstrated all of the core principles that define Common Ground Committee. The audience was inspired by what they saw and we hope those who view the video will experience that same inspiration.
